Detailed Information on Morocco - Sunlight Power MarocProject SummarySPM was originally founded in 1998 to exploit opportunities offered by the Moroccan PV market, with initial focus in the Northern regions on Taza, Sefrou, Taounate and El Khemisset. The original business model was based around a non-subsidized “in-house” fee for service scheme for Solar Home Systems (SHS) of 20-80 Wp, with particular focus on 30 and 50 Wp systems. Under this “utility style” business model, SPM maintains ownership of the SHS and the household pays a deposit followed by monthly fees of MAD 90 for a 30 Wp SHS or MAD170 for a 50 Wp system. In early 2004 SPM signed contracts for 12,000 SHS under the Office National de l’Electricite (ONE) government subsidized fee for service scheme in the regions of El Jadida, Safi and Essaouira. PVMTI funding was requested to fund infrastructure expansion and working capital requirements for the in-house and ONE fee for service schemes, plus funding to attempt to create a new credit business for PV in collaboration with Salafin and other selected micro-finance institutions.
PVMTI InvestmentIFC has committed a total of US$ 1 million as a loan to support the project. Current StatusThe PVMTI project reached financial closure in December 2004. Since closure of the project, SPM has made significant progress, including (i) establishment of 3 new service centers in the ONE regions, taking its total service infrastructure to 7 centers, (ii) continued rollout of installations under ONE and in-house schemes, with 4,500 systems currently in the field for the in-house scheme and ca 1,500 installations under the ONE scheme.
