Detailed Information on India - Shell Solar IndiaProject SummaryThe project encompasses the development of a network of Shell Solar Centres in rural areas of Southern India and the parallel introduction of a consumer finance scheme for PV customers in collaboration with local financial intermediaries. The Solar Centres offer a comprehensive range of PV systems from solar home systems to Solar Inverter based power packs and other PV products, with teams of trained technicians on hand to perform installation and after sales service of the systems. The project is managed out of Shell’s headquarters in Bangalore. The project is seen as a considerable boost to the Indian PV market as it supports the entry of a strong global PV systems supplier. PVMTI InvestmentPVMTI has committed US$ 4 million in loans, guarantees and grant to the project. Loan funds are being used to expand the network of Solar Centres, with the guarantee facility sharing in the risk faced by financial intermediaries of providing end user loans under the project. The guarantee facility has helped kindle interest among private banks and Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) and regional rural banks to boost the lending for Solar PV systems. Current StatusToday Shell has a well established network of 24 service centers. The company has also been successful in establishing strong relationship with several rural banks that are operating in the rural areas. Sales have also expanded to the other South Indian states of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The product portfolio has also been broadened to include thermal systems. Shell has spent considerable time and effort to provide a sound technical and aesthetically pleasing product.
